How to make staff pull up their socks - without the tears

It's tempting to put off a difficult conversation with an under-performing staff member. You don't want to cause upset, discouragement or umbrage. But your business can't afford to carry employees who aren't doing their jobs properly so it's a business imperative to know how to discuss an individual staff member's shortcomings without getting everyone off-side. Laura Birley calls it "giving effective feedback" and she takes us through the conversation to show us how to approach the topic so the employee clearly understands where they're getting things wrong and how to improve.

Giving effective feedback is a valuable skill for any manager to acquire and the staff member in question will appreciate the firm but supportive attitude. Done right and they'll go on to become enthusiastic and valuable members of your business. One tip though - don't wait until annual performance reviews come around. Effective feedback needs to be timely to be most constructive.
