Debt negotiation is still a fledgling industry here, with relatively few practitioners. There's no specific legislation covering its activities so far, so growth is likely to be gradual and measured. But Laurence Hugo, a debt negotiator himself and founder of Credit Mediation Service, says the advantages of debt negotiation for people or businesses suffering temporary financial hardship for a variety of reasons are considerable. He says a lot depends on the skill of the negotiator, but it may be possible to have credit card debt reduced without causing credit rating defaults, or repayment terms on an outstanding loan adjusted to ease the hardship.
