Date: 01/05/2011 Confidence is a wonderful thing, in business as in life, but don't let it blind you to the reality of what's going on around you. Human beings are driven by their instincts and one is self-belief. It gives us the confidence to dream and plan and believe in what's possible. But, says Andrew O'Keeffe of Hardwired Humans, we need to temper that with a healthy dose of realism, or we're likely to come unstuck. In the business context, that means being prepared to submit our optimistic plans and dreams to some careful scrutiny and putting in place the systems and resources to monitor and manage progress. We all have a tendency not to want to hear bad news, and not to have to take unpalatable action, but - for the good of our businesses - there'll be times when we have to. A blend of optimism, to shape our dreams and plans, and realism, to carry them through in a practical way, is the thing we should aim for. Topics: Leadership, Management, Personal Development |
