Date: 01/02/2011 Find out how much your staff love you - before they jump ship, leaving you with an expensive hole to fill As business confidence and job opportunities pick up following the GFC, the issue of staff retention and engagement becomes a top business priority. HR consultant Laura Birley says now is a crucial time to engage with your staff to find out what they really think about their jobs. Are they treading water until a better offer comes up, or are their hearts and minds on the job? First, assess the right people for your business (and don't be afraid to lose those who aren't right). Then, ask them what they think - and be prepared to act on their responses. Laura highlights the many ways you can find out what motivates your employees and she warns that money is often 4th or 5th on the list oftheir priorities. High on the listare recogition, appreciation, opportunities for career development and being involved in decision making. So engage with your staff, be open and authentic in your interest in them, help them to love their work - and you'll be rewarded with loyalty, greater productivity, happier customers, and a better bottom line. A much better alternative to resignation notices and expensive job vacancies to fill. Topics: Human Resources, Management, Personal Development |
