The Budget next month, the Federal election in September - what should we be looking out for?

With two significant events coming our way from Canberra in the months ahead - the May Budget and the Federal Election, economist Professor Neville Norman's advice is to keep a close eye on the main indicators: real economic activity, inflation, exchange rates and interest rates. Economic activity will be shaped in large part by the performance of our major trading partners, and that in turn will define government revenues and therefore policy. With interest rates probably having reached their low point, it may be worth considering locking rates in against a possible rise later in the year. And, Professor Norman cautions, watch the Budget closely - a government struggling in the polls will be looking for ways to get its economic house in order.
